Superbowls a Day

When I talk about yt advertising, I’m talking about something called true view advertising. And it’s all done within the google adwords platform, cause google owns yt by the way. So, it’s kind of like taking a tv commercial and mixing it with ppc advertising. You do that, you get true view advertising.

I want you to think about this, if you had your own super bowl commercial, what would you say? I want you to think about that. I’m gonna pause for a few seconds so you can think about it. Because I really want you to picture in your mind, if you had your own commercial on the Super Bowl, what would you say? You have 30 seconds, what would you say on your commercial?

While you’re thinking about that let me share some stats with you. The last super bowl, advertisers paid $4 million dollars for a 30 second spot. So you could say this is prime real estate for advertisers. What are they paying 4 million for? It’s not to be on the super bowl. The thing that’s attractive about advertising on the Super Bowl is for a couple of hours out of one day, the attention of about 100 million people is fixed for a set time on a single thing. That’s what advertisers are paying for.

What we can learn from this is that attention equals money. When you have someone’s attention it’s a very powerful resource, and it’s a very scarce resource. The message I want to convey here is: where attention goes, ads will show, and money flows. Think about it, FB got popular and boom, ads. Youtube has gotten really popular in the last couple of years and ads are popping up all over on yt now, especially the ones you can skip after five seconds. Even before fb and yt tv, tv is still popular but I think it’s going away, but people’s attention was there, ads. Radio, ads. It’s existed as long as advertising has existed. So again, think about what you would say if you had a 30 second spot on the super bowl.

Now let’s compare the number of views on the super bowl, with the number of views happening every day on yt. Alright, so let’s take a look at this. There were 100 million views on the super bowl last year. There are currently 1 billion active monthly yt users.

Here’s where the crazy part happens: how many views does yt get in one day? They say it gets 4 billion views in every single day.

So to put that in perspective, there are 40 super bowls that happen on yt every day. And the beauty part is you can reach these people for pennies on the dollar compared to what it would otherwise cost you.

When I talk about yt advertising, I’m talking about something called true view advertising. And it’s all done within the google adwords platform, cause google owns yt by the way. So, it’s kind of like taking a tv commercial and mixing it with ppc advertising. You do that, you get true view advertising.

There’s a couple different types of true view advertising. But my favorite is called In stream video, which are those ads that you can skip after 5 seconds.

Let’s talk about targeting your audience, and this is also light years past tv, cause with tv you can only really target certain tv channels and areas, right?

YT on the other hand is hyper targeted, you can target by age, you can target by gender.

Going a step beyond, you can target the interest of a person. So if they’ve been looking up videos about bankruptcy, that would be the interest of the person, so they’re obviously interested in finding out more about declaring bankruptcy. You can target based on the topics of the page. So if the video is how to declare bankruptcy, you can put your ad in front of that person based on their search behavior, even if they’re watching a video on puppies playing or something or something totally different at that moment.

You can also target based on the keywords that people search for of course.

I want to emphasize how big this opportunity is. For years, we’ve had these tv channels that have been swimming in these advertising waters. Little do they know that beneath them are swimming other competitors, especially Youtube, that’s geared to take them out. This disruption is a huge problem for TV right now. But their problem is our opportunity, as marketers, entrepreneurs and business owners. It levels the playing field. We can get our message in front of just as many people as they can—if not more. They’re slow movers, and that’s not always going to be the case.

I’d say right now, with yt ads, it’s the wild west. It’s anybody’s game, it’s this new online real estate, that the first people there will do really well. YT ads today is like where Google Adwords was 15 years ago. It’s at the very beginning, you know it’s not going anywhere, but over the next couple of years it’s going to continue to grow in value.

Here’s something to think about as we wrap this up. What happens when Google outbids ESPN and HBO for content? (pause) It’s not that crazy of a thought. What if the only way you could watch the super bowl, was on yt? It’s not gonna happen this year, it’s probably not going to happen next year, but five years from now, ten years from now, it could EASILY happen. Which when that begins to happen, that’s going to be the go to type of advertising that people pay big bucks for, which we have going on right now for pennies a view.
